Rock Magazine Cover Research - LIIAR analysis
Cover 1
This cover of a popular rock magazine "Kerrang" is a great piece for research as this product has a very similar demographic to mine and is of the same genres.
Language is used in a very expressive way with a lot of emphasis on words such as BIGGEST and EXCLUSIVE and PLUS in order to attract the audience. The fact that all of the words are written in capital letters makes the reader aware of the energetic and violent side to the music included in the magazine. Short punchy sentences are used with only brief overviews of articles and details of contents.
Institutions featured in this cover include the different artists featured in addition to Kerrang! as an institution trying to attract and audience.
Ideology is used as you need to be able to recognize artists names to know who is featured in the magazine. The reader would have to recognize what a gig was in order to understand what is featured in the magazine, and know that "Danger Days" is an album, as this is not mentioned anywhere on the cover.
Audience can be recognized by the artists on the cover, as the features give an insight into what genre the magazine is representing and the clothing on the artist on the main image represents a style of the audience, pulling in the target audience and showing other viewers whether or not the product is for them.
Representation of the audience and artists in this cover come through the costumes and colours used. The black and red colours connote a dangerous and dark genre of music, also reflected through the main article "Danger Days". The artists are all wearing dark clothing, again reflecting the dark genre of the music, and their poses connote them as being wild and dangerous with the main picture artists holding his hands like guns, and artists in the secondary images swearing.

Words I could use for my magazine name
-Influence
-High Voltage
-Charged
-Collision
-Washout
-Affliction
-Revenge
-Downfall
-Subversion
-Persecution
-Dismay
-Hysteria
These words would all make good names for my magazine as the harsh words reflect the dark genre of my magazine. These words are often associated with the conventions of a rock genre and the ideology which goes with it.
I have decided to use HYSTERIA as my magazine name as I asked people in the target audience which one appealed to them more, and HYSTERIA was very popular. I also feel that this name reflects the genre of music as it is unique and unusual, making it stand out from other magazines.

Similar Products - Rock Sound
Rock Sound is a British rock magazine. It aims at sub-genres such as heavy metal, emo and punk music. This is useful as these are genres which I will cover with my magazine. The magazine's tagline is "For those who like their music loud, extreme and non-conformist" which is very appealing to the ideology held by the target audience. The readers of this magazine are 59% female and 41% male. The magazine aims at 15-24 year old's which is the same as my target audience and the same as Kerrang! magazine's target audience. This is because this genre is mostly popular with this age group. This is very close to the demographic for my magazine, and this layout will be considered for drafting my magazine.

Similar Products - Kerrang!
Kerrang! is a UK based magazine in the genre of rock and heavy metal music, published by Bauer. It took its name as it appealed to the ideology of the audience, being a word to do with guitar chords used in this style of music. This is an effective way of selecting a good name that will appeal to the target audience, and I plan to use this method to chose the name for my magazine.
Kerrang! has risen and declined in popularity many times, and has tried to stay in the limelight by sticking to the latest trends within the genre. It has featured many sub-genres over the years and has changed format many times. When producing my magazine, I will try to keep within the latest trends so that I will attract a larger audience.
Kerrang! found that it's readers were made up of 60% male and 40% female, with their demographic being people in social classes D-C. This is useful as Kerrang! has a target audience of 16-24 year old's, which is the same as my target audience meaning that many of the techniques used by Kerrang! can also be used in my magazine.

Reader Profile
This is my rear profile showing my target demographic and what other brands and products appeal to them. This is very useful when making my product as it can help me to decide what conventions will and will not appeal to my target audience, and help me to make a more appealing product. The reader profile also shows the age of my demographic and the percentages of each gender for my audience, along with their social class. These are all important and need to be considered as young people in low social classes will not want to read about glamour or expensive thing, but may be interested in cheaper band clothing or a concert weekend away. This also helps me to develop an appropriate writing style for the desired audience in order to capture their readership.

Music Magazine Brief
My brief is to produce a front cover, contents page and double page spread for a music magazine of a genre of my choosing. These pages must appeal to a specific target audience, and stay within the conventions of the genre. I must use at least 4 original images, research into my target audience looking at similar products, create some hand drawn and digital drafts and evaluate my finished product. I will use PhotoShop to edit my images and construct the front cover and I will use Microsoft Word and publisher to create my contents page and double page spread.

My magazine cover evaluation
My college magazine cover is effective and
catches the audience’s attention by looking unique. The target audience for
this magazine is college students that attend Wyke college, between the ages of
16 to 25. I started by planning my layout so I knew where my header, footer,
image and text was going to be. I then took a range of images and selected the
one I thought looked clearest and achieved the correct look for the purpose. This image also represents the college, and it is easy to infer from this that she is a college student at Wyke. I
then took the institution logo and put it as the masthead with the name of the
magazine “Wyke College Weekly”. I then added cover lines in the same colour
scheme and font style. I also added a flash with a USP and a footer. I then
selected a barcode and added this to the bottom of my cover. This makes it look
more professional as if we were selling it, it would need a barcode. I also
added a price so that the audience can clearly see the how much the magazine
costs. I had to edit the main image so that there was no shadow, as this looked
very distracting in the background. The text could also not be seen clearly
over a background with multiple colours, so I edited it on Photoshop and have
the image a clear white background. I chose white as this works well with the
logo and goes well with the other colours used. I decided to have purple and beige
text as these colours are used in the title and institution logo, and also can
be seen clearly over the main image. I decided to put a background over the
“WIN!” cover line, as it makes the font easier to read and makes this text
stand out more, as it is a USP. I chose to put my cover lines as "A new college year begins" and "best a-level results ever!" as these are things you would typically expect to find in a college magazine, as it helps to promote the college and it's values. I think my magazine cover works well as it has
a consistent colour scheme and the image is easy on the eyes. The photo is of
good quality and is relevant for the institution of the magazine. If I were to
do anything to improve this, I would add a date line and issue number. I would
also maybe try and add a couple more cover lines or a main headline, and try to make some colours more accurate,
to give it a more professional look.

Magazine cover analysis 3
This cover is for a student magazine named "Campus Life". The magazine is aimed at college students or people in higher education. This will most likely be people of ages 16-25. The masthead is seen at the top along with the date line (fall 2008) an the issue number. The magazine has a USP with the chance to win a "Zune" which is appealing to the target audience. At the bottom there are cover lines telling the reader what articles are included in the magazine. There are some articles relevant to the college and some others that are not, but are still relevant to the target age group, like video game reviews. These may go against the ideology of the college, but are appealing to the target audience. This cover also includes a main cover line at the very bottom of the page. The main image is of a young person. You can infer from this and the institution that he is either a college student or someone interviewed in one of the articles. The colours are used well and all text stands out well. The layout could be better as there is a space in the middle of the page with no text, and this looks a bit strange.
Magazine cover analysis 2
This college magazine cover is set out with a masthead at the top reading "college lifestyle". This tells the reader the institution that is behind the magazine, and appeals to the target audience of college students. This cover includes a banner at the top along with the price of the magazine and a date line. The main image is a medium close up and you can infer from the age of the person that he is a student and also that he is stood outside the college, as this is the institution mentioned. The magazine has 3 cover lines and a small overview of what the article is about. The articles are all relevant to college students and these are the expected ideology of a collage magazine. This cover also includes a second image advertising one of the articles in the magazine. There is also a USP at the bottom as they offer a discount coupon with the magazine. The colours used in this cover are used well as all text is clear and readable.
